Benefits of the Big Box Stores

We have our facts wrong about Wal-Mart--this company helps people who are poor. In his blog post, "Boxed-In," Michael Metzger discussess an important worldview lesson about charity.

Instead of castigating large companies and corporations, it would behoove us to understand their function and how they help create jobs and lower costs.

Comments:

Who pays their employees less? Many people pointed a finger at Wal-Mart for that, come to find out that they pay same wages as other grocery stores.

I shop at stores like Giant or Costco Whole Foods, but I also spend money at specialty stores.

There is an interesting push on the food channels for artisan food stores. Seems like a revolution of sorts.
I'm not a Wal-Mart hater (far from it), but the article does not address the fact that the reduction in food costs when Wal-Mart comes in has an effect on the other grocery businesses. Those places make less money and have less to pay their employees.

Economics is extremely complex and we fail when we over-simplify.
