Here’s one more thing I learned from Chuck. For the Chuck Colson Center for Christian Worldview, I’m John Stonestreet with The Point.

I was speaking last week with a former professor of mine who had worked closely with Chuck Colson on a number of projects, most notably Evangelicals and Catholics Together. In fact, I remember as a student hearing from this professor some strong reservations about the project’s real potential for success and alternate potential for disaster. But he stuck with the project, and he stuck by Chuck and I learned this week why.

“Chuck was so teachable,” he said. “He was no lightweight theologically, and he was strong in his opinions, but one always got the impression that he was listening and taking seriously what one was saying.”

Numerous people have made that observation about Chuck, and I saw it too. Chuck realized how vulnerable we all are to self-deception. “There is no limit,” he would say, “to our capacity for self-rationalization.” He learned that from his White House days, and he always surrounded himself with sharpeners. As Proverbs says, “Iron sharpens iron.”
