What did the sexual revolution accomplish? From the Chuck Colson Center for Christian Worldview, I’m John Stonestreet with the Point.
As Mary Ebesrtadt wrote in the Wall Street Journal recently, most of the accomplishments of the sexual revolution are myths, often told but not based in reality. And the idea that it has made women happier? The stats say otherwise.
So what has the sexual revolution accomplished? Well it’s effectively put women in a very vulnerable place by removing all cultural protections against sexual objectification. It’s basic economics -- the law of supply and demand.
Previously, the recognition of marriage as the proper context of sexuality allowed women to set a high price for sex by keeping the supply low. The price was a wedding ring. The lie of “free love” and “free sex” suddenly flooded the market with supply and the price bottomed out. And once pornography entered the market, men could meet their demand without even going to another person.
So when Ann Patchett’s article claims the sexual revolution has been good for women, I’m not buying it. I agree with Eberstadt and you can read her peice at thePointRadio.org, I’m John Stonestreet.
